Not conceived as objects alone, but as volumes within space defined by line, mass, and presence.
At its core, Fundament is about furniture being furniture.
Reduced to what is necessary, yet carrying weight, emotion, and permanence.
A balance between raw and refined, between strength and control.
Not purely heavy, not purely minimal — but precise, grounded, and intentional.
The collection draws from early modern movements, where geometry and material defined the object.
Art Deco introduces a sense of controlled luxury disciplined, precise, and architectural. Modernism brings reduction and clarity. Brutalism adds weight, honesty, and presence.
These influences are not referenced literally, but distilled into a new language: one where furniture is conceived as mass, not decoration as structure, not image. This approach forms what can be understood as an avant-brutalist direction:
Materials are treated as truth. No camouflage. No illusion.
Burned wood and burned steel define the collection, not as finishes but as processes. Fire is used to reveal, to fix, and to deepen material expression.
Textures, imperfections, and contrasts, matte and reflective, dark and light; are not hidden, but emphasized.

Each piece is fully made to measure and customizable, developed in direct dialogue with the space and its intent both for architects, design professionals, and private clients, across residential and hospitality projects.

PHILOSOPHY
The work begins with material, primarily wood, with a particular focus on iroko. Surfaces are burned, brushed, and sealed, creating a texture that captures time and light. Influences range from African ritual objects to Japanese architecture and brutalist structures, unified through a shared sense of permanence and function.
This philosophy extends beyond form. It is also shaped by the act of collecting artworks, ethnographic objects, and exceptional 20th-century furniture. These pieces, across different cultures and periods, share a common ground: they were made to be used.
In Western culture, they often carry an added intention of beauty. In more primitive contexts, value was defined differently. Objects were created by skilled makers known for their craft, not to be sold or admired as art, but to serve a purpose, to respect a culture, and to exist within daily life.
That distinction is essential. True quality was never driven by aesthetics alone, but by knowledge, repetition, and necessity.
Declercq works within that understanding. The intention is to create objects that hold both presence and purpose pieces that are meaningful to live with, not only to look at. They are designed to be used, to age, and to become part of a daily environment, rather than existing solely as commercial or decorative objects.

Metal has long been part of the studio’s language.
Patinated and burned steel have been present throughout earlier collections, not as finishes, but as signature treatments. They carry time, depth, and a certain stillness — surfaces that evolve rather than remain fixed.
With Fundament, this material is taken further.
Bent steel is introduced as a structural approach. Not only to define form, but to create strength from within. Internal constructions allow for lighter volumes without losing their sense of weight or presence. The result is a balance between solidity and precision — forms that appear grounded, yet remain controlled and exact.
All pieces are developed and shaped within our own ateliers.
